A personal essay should be in your own words. It should answer the question posed. You should aim to create a picture with your words; come across as sincere and honest in your character. You should share material that may not be apparent in your application or recommendation. Grammar does count!


College Admissions

Can students overcome a weak SAT or ACT test score?

Possibly. There is agreement that standardized tests will continue to be used by most colleges but consideration is generally given to all aspects of the studentís application.
Although some colleges put added weight on SAT and ACT scores, additional criteria is used by most colleges. These include: GPA, rigor of curriculum, class rank, essays, and
recommendations. For example, well composed answers and a good essay may offset a mediocre verbal test score.

Are home-schooled students at a disadvantage when applying for admissions?

Home-schooled students are not necessarily at a disadvantage. There is agreement that clear documentation of a student's education is critical; this includes the rigor of their curriculum as well.
